Fun Olympiad
Our annual Fun Olympiad Day involves around 200 Year children from 6 different schools, with activities including football, cricket, golf, and tennis. We provide transport and lunch for all the children involved. For some children, this is the first time they have seen such a large green space to play in. Schools enjoy a variety of sporting activities, kindly run by partners such as Surrey County Cricket Club, Chelsea FC Foundation, Leatherhead and Betchworth Park Golf clubs and Reed’s Tennis School. They provide a wonderful day where children begin to realise the pleasure of playing sport and perhaps find a hidden talent. At the end of the session, all of the children receive a medal as a small token to reccognise their effort and participation.
Aims
Reed's is committed to sharing its wonderful sporting facilities with our outreach primary schools.
The success of the Olympiad is the relationships Reed's has built with a number of sporting clubs which helps to deliver outstanding quality teaching and learning.
The immediate beneficiaries are the children who attend. For some children, it's their first taste of tennis, golf, or cricket, or for others, it's the chance for some expert coaching.
Background
At Reed's, we see sport as a vehicle to develop the School's core values of Integrity, Compassion, Curiosity, Resilience, Responsibility, and Independence.
Reed's is very fortunate to not only have excellent sporting facilities, but the coaching of Sports at Reed's is one of our most outstanding attributes.
We are committed to sharing these facilities with state schools and the Outreach programmes including the Olympiad provide an ideal opportunity to develop a life-long love of sport amongst younger children.
The first Olympiad was held in 2011 and has run every year apart from 2000 and 2021 due to COVID restrictions.
Resources
The school sports fields, the astroturf, and the school dining hall are used for this outreach. The Olympiad is run once the Reed's school term has finished which enables us to be able to bring over 200 children onto the site.
A fresh-cooked meal is provided by the on-site caters along with an ice lolly or ice cream for dessert.
Impact
We were delighted to win the TES's 2020 Award for Sport in recognition of both the School's success in sport and the extensive offering of sport in our Outreach programme including the Olympiad.
After every outreach activity the members of staff who attended with the children are asked to complete a questionnaire and give us feedback. We have a wealth of testimonials from schools.
Please can I say a huge thank you for inviting us to take part in your Reeds Olympiad; and for funding our participation and travel.
Andrew, the staff team, and the children all reported what a wonderful day it had been. We really appreciate your generosity.
