Freshford Perform A Midsummer Night's Dream

Freshford Primary School rehearsed and performed a whole school production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at Monkton over a period of three days, with a cast of over 70 pupils. Monkton worked with Freshford to support with sound and lighting, props, and preparing the venue.

Aims

This is a commitment we have had to Freshford for a number of years, and due to Covid, have only been able to bring to completion this year. The need for Freshford was for a venue big enough for the pupils to be able to all perform together, as well as to receive parents and family members. Monkton's assembly hall and lawns were an ideal rehearsal and performance space, and we were able to offer them free of charge as part of the ongoing partnership relationship we enjoy as schools. 158 pupils, as well as parents and staff benefited from this venture.

Background

This opportunity came about as venue prices have risen in Bath and we have a long standing partnership relationship with Freshford so were able to find a time that would work well for us to receive them, free of charge.

Resources

The Monkton assembly hall and adjoining gardens. Catering staff were needed to supply refreshments and cool boxes, and domestic teams were needed for chair set ups and cleaning. Two teaching staff members and  collaborated with Freshford over the logistics and planning. Monkton also provided a £200 contribution towards the cost of a lighting and sound technician to support the production, although Freshford provided the majority of this cost.

Impact

Qualitatively, there was a huge positive impact on the children who were able to enjoy three full days of rehearsing in a big venue together, being part of such a positive production, experiencing the leadership and coaching of the outstanding Freshford team, having access to a large outdoor space for playing and spending time together during the rehearsing period. Additionally there was a benefit to the wider community in that parents and family members were able to enjoy being part of this event and supporting their children.

Pupil Involvement

All pupils at Freshford from Reception to year 67 were involved - a total of 158 pupils.

Frequency

Freshford produce a Shakespeare Play every two years, so we hope to be able to host them again next time and indefinitely for as long as it works for both schools.
