Forensic Science Investigation Day
Twenty four pupils from local primary schools took part in a Forensic Science Investigation Day.
The day involved each team taking part in four different forensic investigations involving flame tests, chromatography, non-metal tests and completing photo-fits.
These investigations allowed pupils to investigate the crime scene and work out who was the thief!
Aims
To inspire a love and understanding of applied science in primary aged children.
To give children the experience of using a laboratory and equipment.
Background
This event was originally run with 7 partners schools, via a link with Chester Municiple Charities.
To improve our links and build relationships with new primary schools in the area, this event has been opened up to new schools.
Science is an area where resources are limited in primary schools and together with a few other areas, this is one we explored first.
Resources
Accessible experiments for primary children in Chemistry which are safe.
Two Chemistry teachers for a day and planning beforehand.
A number of science technicians required to set up beforehand and for the remainder of the day to prepare resources.
Cost of experiments, cover for teachers, extra technician hours, lunch for invited schools.
Impact
The accompanying teachers were asked for feedback after the day. The children were inspired and enthused about science and all of them asked us to repeat the day again next year.

24 Year 6 children from 6 schools.
Support from 6 King's Sixth Form students.
Frequency
Annual event.
