'Fitness and Fun' Sporting Activity

As part of the National School Sport Week, a campaign run by the Youth Sport Trust to ensure that there is a place in sport for every child, Year 4 pupils from local primary schools were invited to attend a morning of PE and Games based activities run by our PE Dept. and using our sports facilities.

Aims

The aim was to invite 240 local primary school children to share our sports facilities and specialist PE staff for a morning of sport with the emphasis on fitness and fun. The children participated in the following activities on a rotational basis:

Striking and fielding games,
Athletics and running games,
Team ball games
Invasion games

Background

This opportunity presented itself when our PE Dept. offered their services as part of our summer activities week and they devised a morning of activities to introduce the primary school children and their teachers to a variety of games and sports skills that they may have not experienced or have the facilities to carry out in their own PE sessions at school.

Resources

We provided a team of our specialist PE teachers and used our sports faculties and we offered refreshments which were provided by our catering dept.

Impact

We had a very positive response to the morning. The children really enjoyed the session and the primary teachers came away with some ideas and techniques for using the activities in their own PE lessons.

Below is some of the feedback from teachers who attended:

“We had such a lovely morning, both staff and children thoroughly enjoyed themselves! The quality of teaching was superb. We look forward to bringing more pupils along next year!”

"We appreciate you including us in this event and the effort of all the staff involved. Please pass on our thanks to the sports team who made the activities so much fun for the children. It was great to see the enthusiasm and engagement of the children who participated happily all morning. There is definitely some great practice that we will take into our own teaching."

Pupil Involvement

We had 240 Year 4 pupils from local primary schools in attendance.

Frequency

This was the second year and we hope to be able to repeat this annually as part of our summer activities week.
