Environmental Education
Winchester College offers a range of environmental education opportunities, taking advantage of the unique position in the River Itchen SSSI. This includes:
- Ecological surveys including random and systematic sampling of vegetation in the water meadows, aquatic invertebrates and lichens on the ancient walls. These are targeted towards the GCSE and A-level specifications.
- Climate Change workshops including role-playing using the EnROADS Simulator and Climate Fresk card sort.
- Hosts the annual Winchester Eco Conference in September in partnership with Hampshire County Council, Hampshire Youth Parliament and the Final Straw Foundation, attended by 150 pupils each year.
- Our Natural History Fellow runs workshops where students learn about the unique ecology of our resident reptiles and mammals.
- Our natural history collections including animal skulls, insects and fossils are used to study evolution and natural history.
- Pupils from local schools joined us in a tree planting project adjacent to the River Itchen.
- Geography fieldwork looking at the carbon stored in trees and the soil under different management regimes.
