Educational workshops and events

St George's School delivers a number of educational workshops and learning experiences to local schools throughout the academic year. 

These have included;

A workshop for future medics followed by a talk from a medical professional. The purpose of the morning was to provide an opportunity for sixth form pupils considering careers in medical, health, philosophical, or similar fields to consider ethical issues in preparation for personal statements and interviews. 

A Geography workshop for local primary children. Their teacher said that they would benefit from individual humanities sessions. The 6th-form pupil worked with the class teacher to create a workshop based on a topic the children had touched on - Earthquakes.

A Centenary debate competition for 6 local primary school children run together with the History department to celebrate ST George's Centenary. 

An interactive French theatre performance for pupils from Y7-9, providing an opportunity for pupils to experience French in a lively, engaging context away from the classroom. The event was attended by pupils from SGA and St Edward's.

Thirty KS2 pupils visited St George's in the morning, and another 30 came in the afternoon, to take part in a Science workshop. The idea behind the session was to explore the different organs and tissues of plants to include cells. Pupils made their own slides of different plant tissues/cells and observed them under a microscope. Pupils were able to see xylem tissue, chloroplasts within cells, the shape of pollen grains and the ova inside the ovary of the flower.

The Art and Textiles teacher from St George's, visited Cookham Dean to help create a mural at the school on the theme of Reflections. Resources costs were given by St George's to enable the mural to be made.

15 Gifted and talented Year 10 students visited St George's from Charters School to take part in a Drama and Classics workshop. The workshop was run by Splendid Theatre Company and involved the practical and theoretical exploration of the tragedy, Agamemnon.

30 Year 6 students visited St George's to learn about the role of DNA, with the opportunity to extract their own DNA and make a necklace from it.

Year 1 pupils enjoyed a morning of music at St George's, learning about drums and the first "mobile phone", how drums were used for communication as well as celebrations. Each group had a chance to use African djembes, sing as a choir with our Director of music, all of which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The Director of Music, from St George's, Ascot, visits St Michael's CofE Primary School every week to run a school choir. Spending 20 minutes with the youngest year-groups and 40 minutes with the remaining students, every child in the school is able to sing, and benefit from his musical and educational experience.

Pupils came to experience the fantastic Science Dome, where immersive, 3D viewing takes you on a journey through the night sky, through our solar system and then into the microscopic world of bacteria and bugs, and shows you how different everything looks close up!

120 pupils from visiting state primary schools were invited to St George's year 7 pantomime performance.

One of our inspiring Art teachers and our Artist-in-Residence visited Frogmore to run workshops with the Year 4 and Year 5 students. The workshops were based around the year groups' termly topic of 'The Environment'.

Our Artist-in-Residence visited Connaught Junior School. She worked with a number of KS2 students to create a sculpture of a double decker bus, to be displayed in the Main Foyer of their school.

The whole of the Year 6 students from St Michael's C of E Primary School, Sunninghill came to St George's to an event which launched the Berkshire Book Awards. They heard one of the shortlisted authors speak about their book, and also to inspire a love of reading. Free books were given out to the students.

We hosted our inaugural Maths Challenge for local state primary schools and independent prep schools. Teams of 4 x Year 5 girls came to a Maths Challenge before having lunch with us. One of it's aims was to promote Maths with female students and enable some students the opportunity to excel in this subject area.

Aims

St George's School pupils are lucky to have access to a range of diverse teaching subjects. We enjoy share these resources and opportunities with pupils in the local community. 

Resources

The event needed the input of 4 A-Level teachers from Science / RS, rooms and catering.

Impact

The feedback from pupils after these events is  extremely positive, to the extent that many of these activities will now become annual events.

Frequency

These events run throughout the year, with many being repeated annually.
