Edgbarrow Latin Project
For the past six years, several Wellington Latin teachers have delivered Latin lessons to Edgbarrow pupils and Staff, with a view to their completing GCSE qualifications in the subject. We have now had three years of excellent results from their cohorts.
Aims
Widen maintained sector pupil academic access to Classical Languages.
Background
A project initially set up in 2014-2015 by one Wellington teacher. He contacted Edgbarrow directly and negotiated with the Headteacher.
Resources
Wellington College Staff time - 1.5 hours per week (Wednesday afternoon). Books supplied by Wellington. We recently secured Edgbarrow some funding for the programme through 'Classics For All'.
Impact
Precise and measurable - Academic Grades: 8 pupils completed the OCR GCSE Short Course qualification (3 A*; 3 A; 2 B) and last year the first five completed the WJEC full GCSE qualification (one 9; three 7s; one 5). The MFL Department at Edgbarrow were impressed by these last results and opted to include them in their results data.
USP for Edgbarrow School: they now use the Latin Programme as a pupils recruitment factor.
Pupil Involvement
3 staff; currently 6 students (Sixth Form Classicists).
Frequency
Every week for the past six years.
