Economics Talk by Professor Abhinay Muthoo

In the Lent term, the Economics department were delighted to host Dr Abhinay Muthoo, Head of Economics at the University of Warwick, as a guest speaker. Students from The Charter School, Dulwich College and JAGS joined us and there was a full house in the Robert Laurie Lecture Theatre at Alleyn’s.

Dr Muthoo presented the case for believing Economics is THE subject of the century and discussed its links with the big issues of the day: inequality, Brexit, climate change, etc. There was some lively debate during the Q&A and students came away enthused and committed. It proved to be a great taster of what a University lecture is like. The talk was hosted as part of the Southwark Schools' Learning Partnership (SSLP).

Background

The Southwark Schools’ Learning Partnership was established as a DFES London Challenge project in 2003.

It followed an initiative by Professor Tim Brighouse, the Education Commissioner for London, to promote the participation of independent as well as maintained schools in the challenge of raising the standards of all pupils across the capital to meet the ‘London Challenge’ – breaking the correlation between economic disadvantage and achievement.

Resources

Each department at Alleyn’s now has a designated SLLP link member who is actively engaged in developing educational opportunities with schools across the borough.
