Debating and Oracy

CLS has an ongoing commitment to fostering debating and oracy programmes as a tool to promote social mobility. This has involved a variety of events with multiple partner schools.

Aims

Debating has proved to have a substantial impact on improving confidence and oracy within pupils and so embarking on programmes such as these allow pupils to improve and develop as speakers. A safe and supportive environment is required for this outcome.

Background

This programme is the product of a continued focus on oracy as well as support from teachers within CLS who wish to partake in the programme.

Resources

The events are hosted by a member of staff who runs all debating activities within the school. The events also make use of school facilities.

Impact

The impact of such events is monitored using the tool ImpactED. One event in March 2024 showed a 6.9% increase in confidence voicing opinions and a 11% increase in oracy confidence.

Pupil Involvement

Various state run schools involved as well as CLS and CLSG. Normally pupils are from Year 6 and Year 7.

Frequency

This is an ongoing programme with a variety of events normally happening a couple times year with the intent of continuing for many years.
