Dance School

Children at Wellington School have a wide breadth of opportunity within the Performing Arts, we produce shows that are labelled as being “West End quality” with large casts, stretched across year groups.
We have children currently performing lead roles in West End shows, for example Mary Poppins and Matilda. There has been a high success rate into national programmes such as National Youth Theatre and British Youth Musical Theatre and last year one of our students was accepted onto the prestigious BA Acting course at LAMDA.
Within the last year we have wanted to extend this provision beyond Wellington School and into the local community, giving every local child the opportunity to access all that the Performing Arts has to offer.

Aims

* Give our local community access to our excellent Performing Arts provision and facilities
• Continue to develop appreciation and recognition of the Performing Arts and all that it can offer our young people.

Background

After setting up a stage school, the next step was recruiting an excellent dance teacher to allow us to run both Modern and Ballet tuition. This happened very quickly, and we were able to set up dance classes that ran after school and were open to both our own students and children from the wider community.
We developed our old nursery into a top-class Dance Studio with sprung floor, mirrors and barres and the popularity of classes grew. Our ballet tots class aimed at pre-school children filled within days.

Resources

We use our own purpose- build studio with spring floors and wall to wall mirrors. We have employed a specialist dance teacher, which is a cost-neutral position.

Impact

Performing Arts is now not only accessible to all within Wellington, but it is also thriving, student success rates are high and participation levels are great. Children from every background are benefitting from our new innovative offering at Wellington School.

There are now over 60 children currently taking ballet and modern lessons with dance running through the week into the evening

Pupil Involvement

Our dance classes are for children 2-18 and are taken up by children from the local community

Frequency

Many dance classes  - ballet and tap - throughout the week for different abilities.
