Community work in 2024

MACA and King's working on Diversity

As part of the broad education provided by King's School Rochester on 9 October, we were pleased to welcome back Dr.Carol Stewart and one of her young assistants to run a Diversity Workshop with our year 9 and 10 pupils. During the morning sessions, pupils worked together as teams of 8 and completed various exercises and discussed the results and their feelings.

Supporting Medway RFC and the Community

On 6 October King's was able to support the Medway RFC Minis festival run for children from 6 to 12 years old, by lending the ALps playing fields as a car park. By allowing visiting teams to park at the side of the King's grounds it enabled just under 50 cars to park off of the local streets.

King's as part of the Heritage Development of the Medway towns
Medway is one of 9 areas entitled to a £200 million National Lottery investment and King's were invited to take part in a workshop with an estimate of 150 people taking part. We held round table discussions about various good causes based on developing our heritage i.e. small museums, green projects, preserving buildings as well as working together to get more volunteers together and collaborating.

Groups were encouraged to participate in 2 phases of round table discussions.

King's led one of these talking about provision for the youth and the potential for Arts and Drama support.

Working with AROPS
11 July King's Rochester was pleased to host the regional meeting of the Association of Representatives of Old Pupil Societies (AROPS).

The meeting with organisations across the UK (with reps from Crosby, Cheltenham, Oxford and Kent was a great opportunity to share thoughts and best practices on Alumni, Development and Partnership work.

Aims: To share thoughts and best practices on Alumni, Development and Partnership work.

wHoo CIC joins King's Summer Concert
25 June - We were delighted to be joined by Michelle Trumper and a small group from wHoo CIC at the end of year Summer Concert.

The event, which is a celebration of the Musicians in the King's Senior School, performed across a varied collection of Music genres, allowing bands, orchestras and individuals to contribute.

As our Director of Music is leaving King's the celebration was also joined by a number of former pupils (Old Roffensians) and by a choir from the Rochester Choral Society.

We were delighted to host this event in the Cathedral Nave which allowed over 250 friends and  families joining this celebration.

Background: An annual event held in the Cathedral

Resources: This involved approximately 70 pupils and 20 staff

Impact: Gave great enjoyment to the OAPs, allowing them to develop new musical interests

Pupil Involvement: King's pupils from 13 to 18

Frequency: Annual

King's School Rochester Prep School IAPS fundraising concert

13 May 2024. It was a great day for King’s School Rochester and Rochester Cathedral as we jointly hosted the IAPS Festival of Singing with 150 pupils (from years 4 to 8) from Ashford School, Granville School, Holmewood House School, KSR, Russell House School and St Michael’s Prep School. They sang a varied collection of items and were accompanied by the King’s Rochester Orchestra.
The afternoon was spent in rehearsals focused on the communal pieces for the whole choir.

The evening, with several hundred proud families, guests and friends in the Cathedral, the concert
was held with the proceeds going to the IAPS Charitable Trust.

Joint working with Canterbury Christ Church University
KSR is currently investigating a number of joint activities with Canterbury Christ Church University which will enhance the development of pupils and students at both organisations.

Bach St. Matthew Passion Concert
In February the Rochester Choral Society will be performing in Rochester Cathedral, singing Bach's St Matthew Passion Concert.

To support the preparation by the local community Choir for this mammoth performance, the 70 or so members of the local community singing in this event are using the King's School Hall regularly for rehearsals.

Impact: It makes such a difference rehearsing in a facility which gives us some experience similar to that of being in the Cathedral Nave.
