Community work in 2022

In 2022, King’s continued to be involved with the local community and participated in various events with age groups across Medway, including those not associated with education.

Language and Culture Charity Event for Medway African and Caribbean Culture Association:
Friday 30th September was a significant night for King's School Rochester, with our school hosting its first ‘Language and Culture Charity Event’. A student driven initiative, it rallied support from a fantastic number of pupils and staff and proved a great way to close our exciting week of learning about new languages and cultures.

The Languages and Culture Week was a vibrant and busy time: it began with a cultural dress up day, consisting of pupils expressing their identities by wearing cultural attire to school. It continued with a variety of interactive activities and assembly for students to enjoy, finally culminating in the Languages and Culture Charity event in support of MACA: the Medway African and Caribbean Culture.

After much hard work and dedication from pupils and staff throughout the weeks leading up to the event, a spectacular night took place. This event focused on celebrating the vast cultural diversity within our local community. The Languages and Culture Night entailed a range of performances from poems in students’ native tongue to dance and song. And of course, some friendly King’s competition consisting of bingo, a quiz and a raffle.

To top it off, the night included a buffet encouraging people to try different cuisines, with Italian, Nepalese, Thai and Indian food available, all donated by local businesses whom we thank for their support. It was amazing to see parents, pupils and friends of the school fully immerse themselves in this cultural celebration, showing their support and dressing up in their own cultural attire.

In support of our local community, this event aimed to raise money for the Medway African and Caribbean Association, which is a non-profit organisation which promotes awareness of African and Caribbean Culture, through arts, educational and social programmes.

Kindly, MACA attended the event, performing a range of phenomenal songs and dances throughout the night.

Subsequent to the event the School, thanks to an additional contribution from the former pupils association were able to donate a cheque for £2,000 to the association

Aims: Celebrating the vast cultural diversity within our local community.

Impact: The fundraising enabled the School to donate £2000 to the Charity

Pupil Involvement: Senior School pupils aged between 13 and 18 were involved

Frequency: We are in follow-up discussions with MACA for closer links and more annual fundraising.

Partnership with Rochester Cathedral
The King’s School has had an integral relationship with Rochester Cathedral since 604 AD when the School was created by Justus.

The Cathedral is a centre for worship for the School and is used as a venue for concerts, celebrations and events across the School. The Cathedral and School has a close working association with the Dean and Chapter, sharing various administrative and managerial responsibilities and the School educates the Choristers and provides additional musical support.

Aims: To develop religious beliefs

Frequency: Daily during term time.

Partnership with Icon Theatre
King's School Rochester collaborated with Icon Theatre, based in the Brook Theatre, Chatham to use the School Hall as their Green Room in February 2022 for the "If Not Now" Medway Lights Event.

The show went amazingly well with over 180 participants and an estimated audience of around 6.000 people over the 2 days, in Rochester Castle. The rain miraculously stayed away.

Kent Youth Wind Orchestra
King's Rochester host sections of Kent Youth Wind Orchestra annually.
