Community Work
Crown and Manor Boys Club, Hoxton
Winchester College has been linked to the Crown and Manor Club since it's foundation in 1939. This year we have organised a number of joint events: three science teachers visited the club to give practical sessions in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We have also welcomed groups of club members to Winchester for day long visits including activities in sports, Maths, Science, Art and English, as well as a visit the Treasury.
Fundraising: CCF Mallory Challenge 2020 for SSAFA
A Winchester College CCF team of 55 staff and boys completed their challenge to run, cycle, and row a cumulative distance of 10,300km from Winchester to Everest Base Camp ‘virtually’, in aid of SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity. This was to have been the school's fourth adventure challenge in the Lake District, named after Old Wykehamist and pioneering Everest mountaineer George Leigh Herbert Mallory (Coll 1900-1905). The decision was made to complete the challenge virtually as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. The challenge raised over £10,000 for the Hampshire branch of SSAFA, which provides welfare, health and support services for the UK military's serving personnel, veterans, and their families.
Aims:
To travel 10,300km, with a minimum of one third of the distance to be covered on foot.
To raise at least £1 for each km of the challenge for the Hampshire Branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, to support serving and former military personnel and their families through their own challenges.
Background:
Started in 2013, the Winchester College Mallory Challenge commemorates the spirit of Old Wykehamist and pioneering Everest mountaineer George Leigh Herbert Mallory (Coll 1900-1905). During each of the previous three challenges, the Winchester College CCF has completed an arduous week of adventure in the Lake District by canoe, foot and mountain bike to raise funds for service charities.
Resources:
A total of 21 members of Winchester College staff participated in the Mallory Challenge 2020 over 17 days, including the CCF and Adventure Education staff, as well as some volunteers from other disciplines.
2 boys assisted in the running of the virtual challenge, by processing data from Strava and running a fundraising campaign on social media.
The participants used the Strava app to track their distances, either on a smart watch or mobile phone. As it was a virtual event, the challenge did not use any school facilities, everyone participated from their home.
Time was a key resource in this challenge, as the staff and boys involved were also managing a full timetable of school commitments.
Impact:
In 2020 the Winchester College Mallory Challenge team covered a total distance of 10,300km in 17 days by running, cycling and rowing, and raised £10,223 for the Hampshire branch of SSAFA.
The previous three Mallory Challenge events raised a total of £65,000 for the Royal British Legion.
Pupil involvement and ages:
In 2020, 34 CCF Cadets aged 15-18 from Winchester College participated in the challenge.
Frequency and Duration:
The Mallory Challenge has now taken place four times since its inception in 2013. The school expects to reschedule the planned 2020 event.
