Community Service - Caring for the Elderly

6 Y11 students visit elderly people in the community for one hour a week (2 at each). They visit Alexandra Nursing Home, The Old Vicarage and an individual, Jennifer in her own home in Breaston. They spend time talking to the old people there and playing games to help stimulate them and provide a point of interest.

Aims

The aim of the project is for Trent pupils to broaden their horizons and give something back to the community. In doing so, they will provide valuable and much appreciated support to some of our elderly and bring an external stimuli that they may not otherwise get.

Background

The opportunity was identified by our Community Service Co-ordinator, who was looking for ways to place our students purposefully in the local community.

This is a long running partnership.

Resources

The only resource is the students time and the time of a teaching member of staff, who drives the Trent College minibus to transport the students to the care homes.
