Code Breaking Day
This has been an initiative run by the mathematics department for local primary schools. Local primary schools are invited to a fun mathematics code breaking day; they all become secret agents. It is a highly competitive day with schools hoping to be crowned top Fylde Coast code-breakers.
Aims
The aim of the day is to promote the practical applications of mathematics. Mathematics can be seen as some as a dry or challenging subject. This fun and engaging day out for students shows a new side to the subject.. Each year
Background
This initiative has been running since 2010 and it was set up by the then Head of Mathematics. He wanted to engage more students in the subject in a non-curriculum based way.
Resources
The code breaking day is held at Rossall school once a year. It uses the main hall at school and all of the children are given lunch in the school dining hall. The activity lasts for the school day and is planned and run by our own maths department. If partner schools want to attend, but have no transportation, we provide minibuses to bring students to the event.
Frequency
This is an event that has been running every year since 2010. It is run once a year and will continue to be run each year going forward. On average 100-120 pupils attend the event.
