Christmas Carol Roadshow

Our Director of Music took 15 Year 7-9 pupils to play musical instruments and perform a number of christmas songs and carols to two external primary schools, Fernwood Junior School and Bramcote CofE Primary School, and to the local community at the Tesco store in Long Eaton.

Aims

The aim was to provide a mini-concert to primary school children to help celebrate Christmas, but also to provide the opportunity for the children to hear a range of different instruments being played and to inspire them to want to play their own to make music of any description.

It also provided a performance opportunity for our own students, to play in a small group for an external audience.

Background

The project was identified by the Primary School Liaison Co-ordinator as a way of positively contributing to the christmas activities that take place at primary schools, while providing an educational value in the range of instruments that were being played.

Resources

The Director of Music and the Primary School Liaison Co-ordinator were the only two members of staff to attend the school visits. The pupils took along their own instruments to play. There was rehearsal time prior to the roadshow day and a morning of performances. The students were driven in a Trent College mini-bus to the external primary schools and back again.

Impact

Verbal feedback from the head teacher and staff at the schools was very positive. The children all thoroughly enjoyed the concerts and were joining in the singing to help get them in a festive mood.

The local shoppers at Tesco thought that the playing was beautiful and there were many very positive comments about the quality of music that they heard.
