Choral Workshops
Shrewsbury High Schoolorganise and host Year 5 and 6 Choral Days, where pupils from different primary schools in the area come together to form a choir. It is a really special day with pupils being able to experience a unique opportunity of being part of such a large ensemble. This event is free to all participants.
Throughout the day, pupils work on their ensemble skills, listening skills, how to balance each part and how to sing as a choir. It is a fantastic musical experience which enriches their education and leaves them with lasting memories. The sessions begin at 10:00 and continue until 15:00 when there is a spectacular performance to showcase the work that has been achieved throughout the day. Parents are invited to come to the concert and then take their children home with them at the end. The day also includes lunch for all participants.
Aims
To provide the opportunity for children to take part in a large choral activity working on their ensemble skills.
Background
The event was the idea of our Director of Music who is passionate about getting children singing.
The day will run once a year indefinitely.
Resources
The day is held in our New Hall on the school site as it is a large enough venue for the 150 children taking part, the parents and live band.
It is staffed by our Music Department and runs once a year.
Shrewsbury High School covers all the costs of the minibuses, refreshments and resources - there is no charge to the schools taking part.
Impact
At the end of the academic year, we ask every school who has taken part in our Outreach Programme for feedback asking in particular for WWW (What Went Well) and EBI (Even Better If).
The event is very popular and is oversubscribed.
Pupil Involvement
Our own pupils take part, with the rest of the choir coming from local state primary schools.
We have places for 150 children to take part from year 6 (age 10-11 yrs).
Frequency
This event happens once a year for a whole day and is planned to continue for the foreseeable future.
