Bordon Junior School - Coding Project

Year 9 and 10 Computing students from Frensham Heights are teaching coding to Bordon Junior School Year 5 children through the use of robots and iPads.

Aims

The aims of this partnership are to assist the local primary school in specialist subject areas whilst also giving our students leadership opportunities

We identified that Bordon Junior School needed support both with developing their coding scheme of work for Year 5 and also with bringing it to life.

The critical factors are to ensure that the Frensham Heights students are prepared and have sufficient knowledge to be able to deliver the content. Continual liaison between Frensham Heights and Bordon Junior School staff helps make sure both sides are fully prepared.

The immediate beneficiaries are the Bordon Junior School Year 5 students and the Frensham Heights Years 9 & 10 Computing students.

Background

This partnership developed after Frensham Heights contacted the local primary schools offering specialist subject support.

The opportunity arose after Frensham Heights liaised with Bordon Junior School's IT lead and discussed areas of the curriculum that might need some support.

The project has been running for two years.

Resources

The most important resources are our specialist IT teachers' time and the robots and iPads needed to bring the coding scheme of work to life.

Logistically it is difficult for the Bordon Junior School students to come to our site, so Frensham Heights teachers and students travel to Bordon to deliver the sessions there.

We use two teachers for two hours every week. There is no direct financial contribution, just the teachers' time and the equipment needed.

Impact

We use qualitative assessment to monitor the project. We liaise with Bordon after every session and request feedback after every half-term to see if the programme needs adapting or developing.

Frensham Heights students have fed back about how much their confidence has developed through leading sessions and how their planning skills have improved through session preparation. Bordon Junior School feedback regularly to let us know they have seen excellent engagement from their students in the coding sessions.

Pupil Involvement

Frensham Heights Years 9 & 10 Computing students and Bordon Junior School Year 5 students are fully involved in this partnership.

The Frensham Heights students are 13 to 15 years old and the Bordon Junior School children are 9 and 10 years old. All genders are included.

Frequency

This is an ongoing activity which takes place every Tuesday throughout the academic year. It will be continuing long term.
