Bicycle Restoration and Donation for Ukranian Families
Bicycles have been restored by a teacher and students over the last year and given to local Ukrainian families and others in need of transport.
Aims
The aim of the project was to provide bicycles to families in the area who would benefit from them.
It was recognised that there were young Ukrainians in the local community who would benefit from bicycles to get around the area.
The critical factors in this project being a success are the students and teacher engagement in donating and fixing the bikes.
The immediate beneficiaries are the children who need bicycles and our students and staff who volunteer their time.
Background
The project came about through our continued relationship with the local Ukrainian community and the opportunity was identified by Lynn Goodburne, our Head of Outreach and Community Engagement.
It has been running for two academic terms.
Resources
The critical resources are the students' and teacher's generosity and time and the donated bicycles.
The students and teacher use the school facilities and tools to fix the bikes along with the school van for transport and a room for storage.
Teaching staff are involved - one teacher for several hours over the course of the academic terms.
There is no direct financial contribution.
Impact
There has been no formal assessment of the project.
Pupil Involvement
Students from Years 7 to 13 are involved in the project with all genders included.
Frequency
This is an ongoing project taking place once a week during an extracurricular club. It will continue long-term.
