Beechen Cliff CCF/ Outdoor Pursuits

This initiative is about sharing Monkton's grounds and resources with Beechen pupils to benefit them and develop closer links between the two schools.

Firstly, this will allow Beechen pupils to practice skills they have learnt under lockdown in the CCF on Monkton's grounds. They will be setting up shelters and learning to cook outdoors on military stoves (mess tins and gel fuel). They will learn about camouflage and concealment, sentry duties, patrolling etc. This two day exercise 9-10 July will provide them with excellent skills and experience to spend 4 days in the Brecon Beacons the following weekend.

We are also going to lend compasses for 180 Beechen Year 8 pupils to learn navigation skills. Going forward we are seeking to develop ways that the two schools can work together on outdoor pursuits and CCF initiatives and this case study is a first step in that direction.

Aims

To develop a strong working relationship between Beechen Cliff School and Monkton to the benefit of all pupils, providing enrichment opportunities for outdoor pursuits and CCF.

Background

The opportunity was identified by a staff member whose time is shared between Monkton and Beechen Cliff. It emerged as a partnership priority over this academic year as opportunities for extra-curricular activities in many non ISC schools have been unavoidably reduced due to the pandemic and this is an opportunity to open up possibilities for these pupils again.

Resources

This first part of the initiative will be based in the Monkton Prep School Grounds and involves use of the grounds and bathroom facilities, as well as staff.

There is no financial contribution required, it is simply about better sharing our resources.

Impact

Overall 210 Beechen pupils benefit from navigation training experience as well as a smaller group receiving in-depth training and experience over two days that will prepare them for a later expedition.

Pupil Involvement

Year 8 and above.

Frequency

This event on 9th and 10th July, followed by the navigation training later in the month, are one-off events but we very much hope they will lead to further engagement and shared initiatives as the relationship develops.
