Access to swimming

The Grammar School at Leeds works with local schools to enable them to use their swimming facilities when not in use for their own pupils.

Aims

To enable more children to learn this life-saving skill.

Background

GSAL was approached directly by the schools as they were struggling with the availability and location of council pools.

Impact

'I have never seen children make so much progress through a course of lessons. When I first took the children some had never been in a swimming pool and were nervous. However, by the end of two weeks they were jumping in and swimming 25m,' Deputy Head Allerton Primary School.

The facilities are hired out for two weeks every summer.
