AbingMUN18 - Abingdon School Model United Nations 2018
On Saturday 1st December 2018 Abingdon held its inaugural Model United Nations conference, AbingMUN18. Over 150 delegates from nine schools took part in the day including Larkmead, Bishop Thomas Grant School, Aylesbury High School and Coloma Convent Girls School from the maintained sector.
The standard of debate was very high and delegates in the committees were kept busy discussing resolutions on topics including sanctions against developing nations, the Iranian nuclear deal, contemporary slavery and the deforestation and destruction of habitats. The conference also held an International Court of Justice and a Security Council.
Aims
Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an extra-curricular initiative in which students typically roleplay delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees. It encourages an active interest in current affairs as well as a developing a range of debating and organisational skills.
Background
The idea to hold the conference was Identified by the teacher in charge of Model United Nations and by the student lead.
Resources
School facilities, classrooms, theatre. Stationary and IT also required and MUN kit (flags, desk plates etc.) All visiting students made a small financial contribution. The school subsidised the conference costs.
Impact
MUN works best with a variety of students from different backgrounds and experiences. It lends itself to partnership opportunities across a wide range of schools.
